City council meeting schedule for 2017-18 city budget

   Grand Island, Neb.— City Administrator Marlan Ferguson and Finance Director Renae Jimenez announced the city council meeting and budget session schedule for the 2017-18 budget. 

   All sessions and meetings will begin at 7 p.m. except for the meeting on July 18 which will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held at Grand Island city hall, 100 E. 1st St. Residents are welcome to provide input on agenda topics at all meetings and sessions.

   All meetings will be aired live on Grand Island Television (GITV) on Charter Communications channel 187 and digital over-the-air 50.1. The City of Grand Island also offers a live GITV programming stream that can be accessed with mobile devices at  

   The follow is a list of budget meeting/session and important dates:

-July 18                          Budget work session held at 6 p.m. at the Nebraska State Fair Nebraska Building board room

Discussion will include:

  -general fund expenses including recommendations for staffing  and operational changes

  -recommendations for increasing the general fund revenue to balance the budget

-July 25                          City council meeting—Business Improvement District (BID) budgets approved and Board of Equalization                                                  meeting set

-August 8                       City council meeting—Discussion of outstanding general fund items and review of enterprise funds


-August 15                     City council study session—agenda will include any outstanding items


-August 20                     Hall County certifies taxable property valuation


-August 22                     City council meeting--approval of fee schedule


-August 29                     Special city council meeting—public hearing will open for budget and stay open until the meeting on Sept. 12


-September 12              City council meeting—public hearing continued for budget, approval of budget and salary ordinance will occur,                                          mill levy will be set

 -September 20              Deadline to submit city budget to Nebraska Department of Revenue


-October 1                      New fiscal year begins
