How do I get my partial wheel tax refund?

Grand Island, Neb.— On Aug. 29, 2017, the Grand Island City Council approved an ordinance to impose a motor vehicle fee tax, also known as a wheel tax, within city limits. On Jan. 9, 2018, the city council approved another ordinance, effective March 1, which included changes to the original wheel tax ordinance. One of these changes was regarding the fee for the classification of five ton commercial vehicles.

Residents who paid the City of Grand Island fee of $52.50 between the dates of Nov. 1, 2017-February 28, 2018, are eligible for a $30 refund per qualified vehicle. A qualified vehicle is considered a five ton gross vehicle weight or less. This information can be found on the vehicle registration form.

Reimbursement forms are immediately available at Grand Island City Hall Finance Department, 100 E. First St.; Hall County Department of Motor Vehicles, 121 S. Pine St., and the Utility Customer Service Center, 1306 W. Third St. Forms can also be found online at www.grand-island.com/wheeltaxrefund.

Forms will only be processed at city hall. Checks will begin to be issued after March 13. Refund requests must be received by Tuesday, May 1. Residents will need the following information brought to city hall:

-current registration which states the amount paid for the wheel tax—original document required

-state issued form of photo identification

-a completed W-9 form for businesses requesting a refund

The partial refund will be payable to the owner or owners as named on the vehicle registration form issued by the Hall County Department of Motor Vehicles. A check will be mailed to the address listed on the vehicle registration.

For more specific information about the wheel tax, please go to www.grand-island.com/wheeltaxrefund. Questions can also be directed to Brian at 308-385-5444 ext. 161 or briansc@grand-island.com.
