Hall County Champion Tree Program launches

Grand Island, Neb.—The City of Grand Island Tree Board announces a new Hall County Champion Tree Program. The purpose of the program is to promote public awareness of Nebraska’s forest and tree resources by searching for Hall County’s largest trees.

Residents are encouraged to participate in program by nominating a tree for inclusion in the Hall County Champion Tree Register. Trees can be nominated year-round but will only be measured during the field season of May through August. Nominated trees must be located in Hall County.

Nomination applications can be picked up at the Parks and Recreation office, 100 E. First St., or online at www.grand-island.com/championtree. A completed application will include the following:
-name, address, phone number of the owner(s)
-name, address, phone number of the nominator(s)
            -location of the tree
            -tree species
-height, circumference, and crown spread of the tree

Once the application is received a member of the tree board will confirm the information and check the current register to see if the tree is a champion. Participants will be notified if the tree is or is not a champion. Champion trees will be added to the register and the owner(s) will receive a certificate signed by the tree board president, Grand Island mayor, and Hall County Board president.

For more information about this new program call Barry at 308-385-5569, email barryb@grand-island.com, or go to www.grand-island.com/championtree. Information is also available at www.facebook.com/GrandIslandParksandRecreation.
