Tom Brown

 

Number of Terms Served / Year Elected to Office:
Councilman Tom Brown was appointed by Mayor Margaret Hornady in January of 2007.

Education/Background:
Brown graduated from Grand Island Central Catholic.  He has a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration.

Place of Employment:
Brown serves as the Director of Security with IPC International located in Chicago, Illinois.  IPC International contracts security services to malls across the country and his client in Grand Island is the Conestoga Mall.

Reason I Ran for Public Office:
Brown ran for City Council because he loves Grand Island.  He said he cannot imagine living anywhere else, and hopefully his children and many other young Grand Islanders will feel the same way when they are adults.  He wants to do whatever he can to make Grand Island the type of city where individuals want to raise their families, build their careers, and live their lives.

Goals or Areas of Special Interest:
Goals that Brown has are to work with public safety officials to ensure Grand Island is as safe a community as possible, to help Grand Island continue to grow by promoting economic development, and making Grand Island a smoke free community.

Community Activities and Organizations Involved in:
Before being appointed to the City Council he served on the Regional Planning Commission for three years.  He is also on the steering committee of the new Boys and Girls Club which is currently being established.  Tom coaches Grand Island Little League baseball, basketball, soccer and football.

Family Members:
Brown has three wonderful children ages six, nine and 13.


Peg Gilbert

 

Number of Terms Served / Year Elected to Office:
Gilbert was re-elected for a second term in 2006.  Her first term began in July 2003 when she was appointed by Mayor Jay Vavricek and the Mayor’s Advisory Committee.

Education/Background:
She has a master's degree in Nursing from Creighton University.

Reason I Ran for Public Office:
Gilbert ran for office as a desire to be a part of the decisions to move the community in a forward direction and to retain our population and encourage others to consider Grand Island as their home.

Goals or Areas of Special Interest:
Gilbert considers public safety, clean communities, water quality, and activities for family participation as all areas of special interest to her.

Community Activities and Organizations Involved in:
Natural Gas, Stolley Park Re-use Committee, Project Heartsave, Doane College Advisory Board, United Way Board of Directors, Planning Committee for the United Way.

Decision/Action of Which You Are Most Proud:
She is proud of participating in the budget process which resulted in no mill levy increase for property owners.

City-Related Boards/Committees:
Gilbert believes in giving back to her community through her service on the Economic Development Corporation Board, United Way Board, Community Redevelopment Authority and multiple task force projects.

Family Members:
Gilbert is married to her husband Dale and they have 2 grown children.
