Take some precautions so you can enjoy the water

It's that time of year again when a lot of us will spend more time in and around the water.  Drowning is one of the leading causes of death among children 14 years and under.  Please take a few moments and read the following ideas to keep in mind while enjoying the water

  • Learn to swim. Swimming lessons for children over the age of four are highly recommended.
  • Water enrichment classes are beneficial to children under the age of four.
  • Always stay and have an adult present when children are swimming.  This person must also be confident in their own abilities before taking children swimming.  Remember never to swim alone.
  • Don't rely on floatation devices, such as rafts, without the use of proper fitting life jackets.
  • Always protect your head, neck, and spine.  Never dive into unfamiliar waters.  Feet first the first time.
  • Never mix alcohol and water activities.  This sometimes gives a false sense of ability to a swimmer.
  • Use of a sunscreen of the appropriate type and level of protection.
