Mock Car Crash - Operation Think

Operation Think"Think before you drink, think before you drink and drive, and think before you get into a car with someone who has been drinking." This was the message given to Grand Island Senior High Sophomores during Operation Think. This program offered valuable advice from various types of rescue personnel, who focused upon the dangers of drinking and driving.

Following an informational assembly in Senior High's auditorium, a mock accident was staged at Forrest and Kruse Streets. Sophomore students assembled on the lawn next to the staged event and watched as events unfolded. Jill Thomas, DJ for KSYZ, narrated the events as they occurred.

Operation ThinkThe officer continued to demonstrate the odds of being in such an accident. In his two years as a school resource officer, he has seen three Senior High students die in alcohol-related deaths. He challenged the students to
be the first class to fully survive to their graduation.

Deputy Hall County Attorney Mark Berton also informed the group of the uncertainty of their future, should they be charged as a drunk driver. "I feel that if a person is old enough to drive a car, they are old enough for adult
consequences."

The students were also advised to not only to steer clear of drinking and driving, but also to avoid being a passenger of a drunk driver. And, most importantly, to wear a seat belt.
