Children's Services

baby zone

We are excited to present our new Baby Zone Area at the library thanks to the grant support from our community partner Sixpence - Head Start Child Development and Family Program, CDFP.  This space is located in our children's area Discovery Center. Take a look at all the new furniture and toys for babies and toddlers ages 0-3 years of age.

The library and Sixpence work together in many capacities.

  • The library provides a safe, educational place full of books, materials, and other hands-on interactive toys in the community where families can meet with Sixpence staff. The library provides tours and information for young families on getting their child a library card, programs and services they can use, and helps get information into their hands about the library, and other partners of the community.
  • The Sixpence program is granted to the Grand Island Public Schools and provides services on a year round basis for students. They provide contact with actively enrolled families at least three times per month for a total of at least 180 minutes per month (2 of the 3 contacts must be personal visits, totaling 120 minutes.) Their program is designed to serve children prenatally through age 3 for a minimum of 18 – 24 months.

baby zoneWe are the perfect place to bring your child for baby development with many different activities that work together for parent and child. The library promotes helping children be ready for success in school by promoting and modeling the Every Child Ready to Read Initiative of the American Library Association. The initiative recommends five easy ways for children to be ready to read: Talking, Singing, Reading, Writing and Playing.

We also partner with United Way to support their Dolly Parton Imagination Library initiative and offer the bornlearning materials that are handouts for parents with children ages birth -5 years that give advice on their child during the stage of development they are in and they are available in English and Spanish.

Our library offers the Children’s Discovery Center, many hands-on educational stations such as puzzles, music center, castle, blocks, computers, kitchen, coloring and chalk station, and puppets. We also have children’s programming such as Baby Lapsits, Lapsits, Storytimes, Bookbop, Pajama Family Storyhour, and Saturday Storytimes.  See below for days and times.
