Library Reopening West Entrance

    Grand Island, Neb.—

Signaling a major milestone in the Grand Island Public Library’s renovation project, its new west entrance at 211 North Washington Street, Grand Island will be open for business at 9:30 am on Tuesday, January 22.

The library has had a temporary entrance on the south side of the building for several months due to construction of an entrance plaza and renovations to the front entrance. With the new doors now installed and the Meeting Commons (lobby) carpeting completed, enough of the renovation project is finished to turn the full parking lot over to the public. The temporary entrance will be put out of commission and patrons will find more convenient parking in the center of the lot with the more familiar ADA stalls. New to the parking lot are drop-off and pick-up lanes next to the entrance plaza and walkways running up and down the center spine.

That’s just in time for the doors to be opened by a friendly bear welcoming hundreds of children to the annual Bear Fair. This is an annual event combining reading and health for preschoolers and their parents/caregivers. The library partners with health- and safety-related organizations and businesses in the community to provide information, freebies for kids, and fun activities such as Bear Tales and Bearobics!

After the kids head out the new front doors on Tuesday evening, the doors will reopen on Wednesday, January 23rd with the help of representatives of the library’s Friends group. This will be the first of many Friends Welcome/Membership Drive events in the Meeting Commons. Everyone is invited to Friend Your Library through membership, Book Sale, volunteering, financial donations, support for the great library services available to this community, and advocacy for the best future for our library. The Friends group has library coffee mugs for anyone signing up for membership and will be selling tee-shirts emblazoned with Albert Einstein’s bold pronouncement that “The only thing you absolutely have to know is the location of the library.” All proceeds will go toward the Grand Island Public Library Foundation’s continuing fundraising efforts to support this renovation.

Renovation activities are continuing on the east side of the library. Hopes are to have a grand reopening at the library in March after the project is completed. For more information, contact Steve Fosselman, Library Director, stevef@gilibrary.org or 308-385-5333.
