Grand Island Public Library
The Grand Island Public Library Summer Reading Program
Kicks Off with a Blast!!
The 2019 Grand Island Public Library Summer Reading Program theme is “A Universe of Stories.” This summer the library will have their kickoffs for all ages (children, teens and adults) on Thursday, May 23rd, from 6:30-7:30pm and Friday, May 24th, from 10:30-11:30am at the Grand Island Public Library, located at 1124 W. 2nd Street. The kickoff program is a Mad Science show called Walking on the Moon. This show is about the principles of space travel, with an emphasis on the 50th Anniversary of the landing of the first man on the moon during NASA’s Apollo 11 Mission. The show highlights the Apollo Mission spinoffs that earthlings have gained from research into space exploration. Audience participation is a must for this wonderful celebration.
We are encouraging all ages to set up their Beanstack summer reading program account that will allow all ages to enter amount of minutes spent reading and earn online badges and prizes. It is easy to register from our library website www.gilibrary.org, just click the Universe of Stories image or Beanstack heart logo. This will take you to the registration page. Everyone can begin logging his/her reading minutes on May 23 at 6:30pm. If you need a computer or some assistance to register, please stop by the library and staff can assist you. Beanstack also has a cool app, Beanstack Tracker App, which can be downloaded from either the iTunes or the Google Play Store. The app is built specifically for mobile phones and devices. It is a great way to sign-up and to use the timer to time how many minutes you or your children are reading. Everyone can win with reading!
The library will be CLOSED on Sunday, May 26th and Monday, May 27th for the Memorial Day holiday. We will re-open on Tuesday, May 28th at 9:30am. Tuesday our programs are Stories and Crafts and Baby Lapsits at 10:30am. In the afternoon, we will kick-off Tween/ Teen programming with Teen Anime at 2:00pm. The library will offer the popular Summer Reading Enrichment program that takes place on Thursdays from 10-11am. It begins on May 30th and meets every Thursday through July 25th. Patrons need to register their children ahead of time. This program offers a program in which volunteers read with children. Reading consistently over the summer helps children and teens to maintain or improve their reading scores.
