Teaching Electrical Safety

Grand Island, Neb. -- Each spring, members of the Grand Island Utilities Department (GIUD) step away from their day-to-day responsibilities to take part in something just as important as restoring power—educating the next generation about electrical safety.

As part of a yearly outreach effort, GIUD lineworkers visit local schools to teach grade school students how to stay safe around electricity. This spring, they made a special stop at Central Catholic School, where they engaged young learners with hands-on demonstrations, safety tips, and real-life examples of what to do—and what not to do—around electrical equipment.

The program is more than a classroom visit—it’s a chance for kids to ask questions, learn from experienced professionals, and see firsthand how electricity works and why respect for it is critical. For GIUD, it’s an annual reminder that safety starts with education, and even the smallest lessons can make a lasting impact.
