Grand Island, Neb. ā A new partnership between the City of Grand Island and Nebraska Game and Parks may be starting to bloom this spring.
On Wednesday, March 26, the Nebraska Legislature voted unanimously (36-0) to approve Nebraska Game & Parksā indication of intent to incorporate Camp Augustine into the state park system. The move will be either in conjunction with or as part of Mormon Island State Recreation Area and is expected to create significant benefits for the Grand Island area and the people of Nebraska.
āWe couldnāt be more thrilled to learn of the legislatureās full support on this resolution,ā Grand Island Mayor Roger Steele said. āSince taking ownership, it has been our top priority to make Camp Augustine a vibrant state park, and Wednesdayās vote further solidifies the path we will be able to take as a city.ā
The Camp Augustine master plan features several key additions, including expanded hiking and biking trails, river access and campgrounds along with the ability to host local, regional and statewide outdoor events. Big Muddy Workshop led the master planning process, which included three different public input sessions before receiving council approval.
āAs we take these next steps, we are thankful the general public had a hand in shaping our master plan,ā Mayor Steele said. āThis unified vision is what will make Camp Augustine a new outdoor recreation destination for both tourists and local residents.ā
