Grand Island, Neb. ā The Grand Island Police Department has been awarded a mini-grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation-Highway Safety Office to support enhanced speeding enforcement through the āSpeeding High Visibility Enforcementā campaign, scheduled for July 14ā31.
This funding, which is up to $8,800, will be used to cover overtime expenses for officers participating in the targeted enforcement effort. The goal of this initiative is to reduce serious injuries and fatalities caused by speeding on Nebraska roadways.
āWe appreciate the support of the Nebraska Highway Safety Office in providing this funding,ā GIPD Chief Kevin Denney said. āThis grant allows us the ability to increase patrol visibility and take proactive steps to make our community safer.ā
During the campaign, officers will conduct focused patrols with the expectation of exceeding the average rate of one citation per hour, as outlined in the grant objectives. The department anticipates an increase in citations specifically related to speeding violations during this period.
