Escape Plan Contest Winners

Grand Island, Neb. — The Grand Island Fire Department will host an awards ceremony recognizing local third-grade students for their participation in the department’s annual Great Escapes program. The event will take place Wednesday, November 5, at 7:30 a.m. at Fire Station #1, located at 409 E. Fonner Park Road.

As part of Fire Prevention Week, the Great Escapes program encourages students to create personalized home fire escape plans that include two escape routes per room, a designated family meeting place outside the home, and detailed drawings showing how to exit each room safely. Fire department personnel reviewed and judged the entries, selecting one winner from each participating third-grade class, as well as one overall winner from all submissions.

During the ceremony, fire department staff will provide brief remarks and present awards to the winners. Each class winner will be treated to a ride in a fire engine, while the overall winner will receive a special aerial platform ride, scheduled for Monday, November 10, at 1:30 p.m. at the student’s school, which will be announced during the ceremony.
