Grand Island, Neb. — The Grand Island Parks & Recreation Department has completed a court rehabilitation project at Grace Abbott Park, converting existing tennis courts into dedicated pickleball courts to help meet the growing demand for the sport in the community.

The project was completed by Tennis Courts Unlimited, which was selected through the City’s request for qualifications (RFQ) process. Work began on May 18 and included resurfacing and reconfiguring the existing courts to accommodate pickleball play. The total project cost was $49,250. Construction was completed on Monday, June 1, and the courts are now open for public use.

In addition to the new playing surfaces, the courts are equipped with lighting, allowing residents to enjoy pickleball during evening hours.

“Pickleball continues to grow in popularity across Grand Island and throughout the country,” Parks & Recreation Director Todd McCoy said. “This project helps us better meet that demand while making use of existing park amenities. We’re excited to provide players with another dedicated space to enjoy the game.”
