Grand Island, Neb. — The Grand Island Fire Department is conducting firefighter recruit testing today and tomorrow as it works to fill an expected eight firefighter positions in the coming year.

Each day of testing begins with a written examination at 8 a.m., followed by a field assessment at 10 a.m. The field testing simulates the physical demands of serving as a firefighter.

The department received 71 applications during this hiring cycle, marking its largest applicant pool in more than a decade. The recruit testing process is designed to evaluate both the knowledge and physical capabilities required of firefighters, ensuring candidates are prepared to meet the demands of emergency response and public service.

GIFD Chief Cory Schmidt said he was pleasantly surprised to see such a significant number of applicants during the department’s latest hiring cycle.

“There are a lot of people out there who want to serve the community, and it’s a great job,” Chief Schmidt said. “The work of a firefighter is special, and there’s a large group who are wanting to join our team. I feel the Grand Island Fire Department is one of the best fire departments in the country.”

Candidates who successfully complete the testing process will continue through the department's hiring process as Grand Island Fire Department prepares to fill the anticipated vacancies.
