Grand Island, Neb. ā The Grand Island Police Department is starting 2025 off on a great foot, as the final crime statistics for 2024 show a promising trend.
The overall crime rate in Grand Island dropped by 14.37% in 2024, and itās a spark GIPD hopes will carry them into their new goal of an additional 20% in 2025.
āIf youāre going to be a leader and youāre going to be a police department thatās exceptional, you need to put an exceptional goal out there,ā GIPD Chief Kevin Denney said. āWeāre going to do the best we can, and if we donāt get that reduction, weāre going to figure out what weāre not doing right along the way.ā
The ambitious goal comes with four main focus points:
Leadership and Culture within the police department
Improving community engagement
Strategic policing initiatives
Visible patrol
The Grand Island Police Department will be publicizing crime statistics on a monthly basis on both its social media pages as well as its website at www.gipolice.org in an effort to be transparent with the community. In turn, Chief Denney says it will bring even more accountability to the department and its officers.
āWe arenāt doing this to boast or brag about the work weāve done,ā Chief Denney said. āWeāre being open and communicative about this to show the public how far weāve come, but also to show them how much more we want to accomplish in 2025.ā
