Intersection Closure

Grand Island, Neb. — The City of Grand Island Public Works Department is announcing an a planned closure of the entire South Locust Street and Fonner Park Road intersection.

On Monday, April 21, the west side of the South Locust Street and Fonner Park Road intersection closed. North-south traffic is now maintained on the existing southbound lanes of South Locust Street, supporting one lane for each direction for one more week.

On Monday, April 28, the entire intersection will close and a project corridor detour route will be utilized on Stolley Park Road, Adams Street and Anna Street. The project corridor detour route will be in place for the remainder of the construction season. Business access on South Locust Street between Stolley Park Road and Anna Street will be maintained.

A localized project construction zone detour will utilize Oxnard Avenue, Eddy Street and Anderson Avenue. The South Locust Street and Fonner Park Road intersection will be opened in July 2025, weather permitting. South Locust Street will remain closed to north-south traffic for the remainder of the construction season, as the construction zone will continue north of Fonner Park Road. Additional information will be released as phase changes occur throughout the 2025 construction season.

The South Locust Street project includes new construction from Fonner Park Road to Koenig Street. The project will replace the existing asphalt street with a concrete curb and gutter roadway section along with sidewalks/bike trail, storm sewer, water main, sanitary sewer repairs, roadway lighting and associated pavement markings and signage. A roundabout will also be constructed at the South Locust Street and Anna Street/Bismark Road intersection.

The South Locust Street project is scheduled for two construction seasons, 2025 & 2026. South Locust Street reconstruction from Fonner Park Drive to Delaware Avenue is scheduled for 2025. South Locust Street reconstruction from Delaware Avenue to Koenig Street is scheduled for 2026.

On February 11, the Grand Island City Council awarded the South Locust Street construction contract to Elsbury Construction, LLC of Grand Island for $9,044,222.01.
