Grand Island, Neb. — The City of Grand Island and Hall County Regional Planning Commission are warning residents, business owners and developers about a fraudulent e-mail scam currently circulating in the community.
The scam involves messages falsely claiming to be from Community Development Director Chad Nabity and referencing bogus rezoning application fees. The email, which appears to come from an official-sounding address, includes a detailed and professional-sounding message requesting payment for a rezoning application review and approval fee.
It references a specific property, outlines supposed benefits of the fee, and urges recipients to reply to receive wire transfer instructions. This e-mail is a scam. No legitimate government agency will request payment via wire transfer in this manner, nor will they send fee invoices through unsolicited email requests.
If you receive an email like this, do not respond, do not provide any personal or financial information and do not attempt to make a payment. The City encourages anyone who has received this message to report it to local law enforcement and to the Nebraska Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division.
Businesses and individuals who are unsure about the legitimacy of any communication from the City or Planning Commission are encouraged to call City Hall directly at (308) 385-5444. The City of Grand Island takes the protection of its residents and stakeholders seriously and is working with appropriate authorities to address the situation.
