Grand Island, Neb. — Due to limited staffing capacity, the general public may notice a diminished response time to non-urgent animal control calls.

Residents are encouraged to report non-urgent animal issues to the Grand Island Police Department's non-emergency line at (308) 385-5400, Option 1. These issues may include, but are not limited to:

  • Stray or lost dogs and cats

  • Barking or nuisance animals

  • Other non-cruelty animal welfare concerns

Urgent animal-related calls within city limits should continue to be reported through 911 to ensure the fastest response. Examples are:

  • Animal bites to humans or other acts of aggression toward humans

  • Severe cases of animal cruelty or neglect

Non-urgent animal-related concerns—while still important—may not receive immediate response but may still be reported. Residents can play a vital role in supporting one another for minor animal-related concerns. If you find a lost pet, consider securing the animal safely and checking for ID tags or microchips at a local vet clinic. Posting clear photos and descriptions on local social media pages like the Grand Island Lost & Found Pets Facebook group, Nextdoor app or neighborhood pages can also help reunite pets with their owners quickly. Likewise, if you’ve lost a pet, posting online and checking in with nearby shelters or vet offices can increase your chances of a quick recovery.
