Grand Island, Neb. — As we reach the final days of Fire Prevention Week in 2025, the Grand Island Fire Department is kicking off a new initiative to make sure area residents are thinking about fire safety all year long.

Grand Island Fire Chief Cory Schmidt will be featured in a weekly video series titled “Friday Fire Facts,” starting on Friday, October 10. The short, informative videos will feature Chief Schmidt tackling some of the most commonly asked questions about fire safety and emergency response.

From explaining why firefighters do what they do at certain scenes to highlighting simple safety measures residents can take at home, each video will focus on keeping the community informed and prepared. Chief Schmidt said the goal is not just to answer questions, but to keep fire safety fresh in people’s minds throughout the year.

“Fire prevention and safety education can’t just be something we talk about during one week in October,” Schmidt said. “It’s something we all need to think about often, and this series gives us another way to stay connected with the community and help people understand why these topics matter.”

The Grand Island Fire Department has long been recognized for its strong connection to the community—through educational programs, outreach events and an unwavering commitment to public service. The launch of “Friday Fire Facts” continues that tradition by using a modern, accessible format to share valuable safety information directly with residents.

“Friday Fire Facts” will be released regularly on the City of Grand Island’s social media channels, with each installment focusing on a different topic aimed at increasing awareness and understanding of fire and life safety issues — proving once again that the Grand Island Fire Department is not just here to respond to emergencies, but to help prevent them.
