Grand Island, Neb. — The Grand Island Parks and Recreation Department is introducing a new Junior Lifeguard Program designed to help recruit, develop and prepare the next generation of lifeguards through hands-on training and water safety education.
The program is open to youth ages 11-14 and will provide participants with an introduction to lifeguarding responsibilities, lifesaving techniques and aquatic safety practices under the guidance of certified American Red Cross lifeguards.

Participants will receive introductory lifeguard training and gain firsthand experience with many of the duties and responsibilities associated with working as a lifeguard. Those who successfully complete the program will also become eligible to begin employment at a higher hourly rate once they turn 16 years old and qualify for lifeguard positions with the City.
Grand Island’s aquatic facilities, including Island Oasis and Lincoln Pool, are currently scheduled to open Friday, May 30. The Parks and Recreation Department continues to recruit lifeguards for the summer season and provides certified lifeguard training for all new hires.
